Where do I find photos from before I was a student?

School yearbooks in the library, longtime colleagues who have photos, the teacher's own social media (with permission), alumni Facebook groups. Some teachers have been at the same school 30+ years — that means 30+ yearbook photos exist somewhere.

Should I include photos from outside school?

If you can get them, yes. A photo from their college graduation, early career, or personal milestones adds depth. But school photos alone work fine — the visible aging through yearbook photos is powerful enough.

What if the teacher started at another school first?

If you can get photos from their previous school, include them. If not, focus on the years at your school. Even 10-15 years of photos creates a meaningful tribute. Their career at YOUR school is what students are honoring.

When should we present it?

Teacher appreciation week, end-of-year assemblies, farewell dinners, retirement parties, or just a random Tuesday when the class decides to say thanks. Some schools play it during morning announcements. Others save it for a private moment after class.

Can students organize this without faculty help?

Yes, but it's easier with help. A friendly administrator can access old yearbooks. Colleagues can contribute photos. If you're keeping it a surprise from ALL faculty, student council often has yearbook access for planning events.

Should we tell the teacher we're making it?

Most groups keep it a surprise. The impact is bigger when they don't expect it. But if you need their help getting old photos, it's okay to tell them — the video is still meaningful even if they know it's coming.

1. Raid the Yearbooks

Track down yearbook photos from different years — the school library might have old editions. Ask teachers who worked with them, check team photo archives, find classroom pictures. 8 or more photos spanning their career work best.

2. AI Shows the Career

Yearbook photos from different decades go in any order — age detection handles the rest. First-year teacher with a full head of hair becomes the veteran who's seen a thousand students come and go. The classroom changes, the style evolves, but the dedication stays.

Pro Tip: Yearbooks Are Gold

School yearbooks have faculty photos every year with consistent quality. Check the school library for old editions, or ask longtime staff if they saved copies. One photo per decade from yearbooks alone gives you a career-spanning video.
